Vision and Purpose…Work With Me

In February of 2014, I stood atop a smoking volcano in Hawai’i and said a small, innocent prayer: “Dear Jesus, I want to be a travel writer.”

As an actor/singer and adventurer, I have been blessed with plenty of opportunities to travel within the U.S. and internationally and I’ve found great joy sharing my stories and adventures with anyone who wanted to hear about them. To make it easier to share my travels with curious friends and family I decided to begin sharing my travels on a blog. As time has gone on I’ve solidified a two-fold goal; to encourage others like me to get off the couch and out into the world to explore for themselves and to inspire all my readers to live the life and pursue the visions placed on the inside of them, travel-related or not. After hearing the response “I’d be so afraid to do that!” when sharing many of my adventures, I declared “Fear Is Stupid” and that quickly became a life motto and catchphrase for wedontsitoncouches.

My approach is not typical of many travel bloggers. I don’t desire to give lists of “must sees” and recommend the best restaurants and resorts in a location. Rather, my only desire is to share the beauty and truth of my own experience allowing readers the opportunity to feel as if they were along for the ride.

Travel to Inspire…
This is wedontsitoncouches

  1. As a young girl my biggest dream was to have a passport and use it but you see, I was born in South Africa where the apartheid government enforced pass laws, this was an internal passport system designed to segregate population and limit movement of black South Africans, so you see my dream was just that “A DREAM” most black people that did manage to leave the country ended up stuck, exiled and not let back in the country…. So traveling was never encouraged not even within the country… Fast forward post first democratic elections and things started looking up I got an opportunity to go to London and I remember thinking wow I have freedom of movement…. And I must have thought about it long enough when I was young because for the past twelve years I’ve rarely sat on any couch the universe has presented me with plenty options to celebrate my freedom of movement so no, I don’t sit on couches there is still a lot of ground to cover this beautiful earth is huge and I’m celebrating my freedom every chance I get

    1. Buyi, thank you so much for sharing your story and your amazing skydive video. Freedom of movement is something that many in the world do have the opportunity to enjoy. I think it’s important that we appreciate the opportunities presented to us. Thank you for carrying #wedontsitoncouches “down under”!! You’re an inspiration to me. Keep exploring!!

  2. I recently celebrated my 50th birthday and I am all about challenging and changing how people perceive “middle age” and how “50” shows up in the world. During a recent “bucket list trip” to Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro, I decided to go hang gliding! It was simultaneously exhilarating, empowering, and thrilling. No, we most certainly do NOT sit on couches and I pray that it will be a long time before we are forced to! Until then, I will explore, I will celebrate, I will seek out the places and do the things that i have always dreamed of doing!

Take a few moments to view the breathtaking beauty of this adventure!

    1. Russell!!

  3. So far, I’ve been to 229 cities in 21 countries, and counting, and I’ve been fortunate enough to actually live in 4 of those countries. Every trip, every visit makes me wiser, a better global citizen, and with every visit, the world actually seems smaller. I can better use other people’s words to describe what #wedontsitoncouches means to me.

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” ~ Mark Twain

“We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time. ”
    ~ T.S. Eliot

And, yes, I have infected others with the travel bug. I can think of at least 10 people who might not otherwise have moved from their couches without my urging or invitation.

    1. Wow Patrick! Those are beautiful quotes. I love the idea that we can start in one place, explore, learn, grow, and return to the very same place where we started and be re-introduced to something that we already know. What was old and familiar has become new again! That’s an exciting thought! Thank you for sharing and keep it going!!
